If you’re waiting til Thanksgiving night to start your early Black Friday shopping, you’re already late! Three Florida families decided to get a head start on the competition; a nine-day head start.
With the year’s biggest shopping day looming three families pitched tents outside a Best Buy in the Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg, Fla. to get a jump on other shoppers.
“You can’t beat some of the deals they have on plasma flat screens and laptops, and you get to buy it in large quantities all at once,’’ Christine Orta, one of the shoppers, told NBC’s Tampa affiliate. “We’re all students, so (you) gotta pinch a penny. It’s affordable right now.’’
Orta and her fellow shoppers plan on passing the time by playing games or studying. The three groups also plan on sharing food and supplies to tide them over to the big day after Thanksgiving.
But this isn’t a new phenomenon in St. Petersburg where local resident Lorie Davenport, 44, and her family and three friends camped out in front of Best Buy the last six years for at least six days before Black Friday, including nine last year. Some would stay on the line overnight while others went home to get a rest and then relieved their friends and family by taking the night shift the next day. Davenport’s family spent $3,000 last year but told The St. Petersburg Times that they saved nearly $4,000.
Last year, she and her husband made a hot Thanksgiving dinner at their home and delivered it to friends who were content to spend Turkey Day in front of Best Buy.
While I think camping out nine days early is a bit ridiculous I can’t help but admire their determination and effort. But it makes me wonder…
What if we put that same kind of passion into our pursuit of intimacy with the Lord?
Our family has watched Biggest Loser since the show began and have admired those contestants who give their all to change their lives through making healthier choices. So when Susan and I received a gift card for Best Buy we decided to purchase the Biggest Loser Workout for Xbox 360 Kinect. We got it in the mail yesterday and decided to check it out last night. I have to admit that I was impressed with the programs.
Besides a wide variety of programs the actual exercising is very interactive. Along with a virtual trainer to imitate there is also a small image of you doing the exercise off to one side. If you are not getting the movements right your image is red. It turns green when you do get it right.
There are little symbols above your virtual image that turn red or green to let you know when you are moving your arms and feet properly. If you are slightly off there is verbal encouragement to keep trying. And if you are getting it right the trainers – Bob and Jillian no less – encourage you.
The amount of feedback is amazing given that it is just a video game! It’s the kind of support and encouragement that God intends for us to share together in as the body of Christ. We need to be sharing the journey of life closely enough that we can be speaking the truth in love to one another.
Without the feedback of others we can be blind to areas of our lives that are less than God honoring. We need people in our lives who love us enough to point such things out and cheer for us when we get it right. Our “default” setting seems to be doing life on our own; but God wired us to share the journey.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. ~ Romans 12:10
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. ~ Colossians 3:16
Who are you sharing the journey with and how can you encourage them in their relationship with God?
