Simon Says or Operator

A few weeks back we actually played a kids game in the middle of our worship service. Christy, the gal who works with our youth, had everyone stand up and had some of the older kids come forward to lead the game. Once everyone was in place we proceeded to play Simon Says!

You remember that game. You do what the leader tells you to do ONLY if they first say Simon Says. I’ve seen a lot of things over the years but I’ve never seen Simon Says played during a church service! It was really cool. You could tell by the grins on faces that it had been a long time since some of those folks had played what was likely a favorite childhood game.

So what was the point? Simple. In Simon Says there is one identified leader and everyone else simply follows. When God’s word tells us to do something or not to do something, that’s it! Enough said! Done deal!

Jesus is our identified Leader, our Lord. Our part is to follow. And yet… we seem to get bogged down analyzing this word and that phrase. We’re pretty good at taking something simple and complicating it. Sort of like another kids game – Operator.

In Operator one person whispers something to the person next to them and that person passes it on to the next person. This goes on and on around the circle until it gets back to the person who started. More often than not, the final message tends to be very different than the one that started.

God invites us to be a part of His story through a process that resembles Simon Says but we turn it into a game of Operator.

Lord, help us to be better followers!

How true & how simple! Now, if I can just remember!
