Which voice will we listen to?

Frank Furedi documented an increasing use of fear in the media by counting the appearances of the term at risk in British newspapers. In 1994 the term appeared 2,037 times. By the end of the next year, the total had doubled. It increased by half in 1996. During the year 2000 at risk was printed more than eighteen thousand times. (1)

Has world danger really increased ninefold in six years or has fear begun to run amuck? For the first time since the end of the Second World War, parents expect that life for the next generation will be worse than it was for them. (2)

Reporter Bob Garfield tracked health articles in major publications and discovered that, among other health issues:

  • 59  million Americans have heart disease,
  • 53  million Americans have migraines,
  • 25  million Americans have osteoporosis,
  • 16  million struggle with obesity,
  • 3  million have cancer,
  • 2  million have severe brain disorders.

Reportedly, in total, 543 million Americans consider themselves to be seriously sick, a troubling figure since there are only 266 million people in the country. As Garfield noted, “Either as a society we are doomed, or someone is seriously double-dipping.” (3)

What about we who profess Jesus as Lord? Will we give in to this doomsday mentality or will we turn to our Maker, and because we do, fear less? As Max Lucado puts it:

“Courage does not panic; it prays. Courage does not bemoan; it believes. Courage does not languish; it listens. It listens to the voice of God calling through Scripture, ‘Fear not!’

  1. Timely post concerning fear. Fear is running amuck among Christians. ‘FEAR NOT’ is the command from our Lord. But society IS doomed. Society is the ‘world.’ The church remains ‘in the world but not of the world.’ In the midst of doom…we exist in a higher reality….in Christ…in Life….IF we truly are IN Christ. IN Christ there is no fear. But…according to scripture…’few’ are actually IN Christ. Therefore, fear runs amuck….especially among professing Christians. As Christians, we acknowledge that God is soveriegn. But we reject fully the idea that God ‘rules in the kingdom of men./ We INSIST that…by our own authority…and choices…’society’ will be healed. We stand solely on one scripture..’if my people will humble themselves and pray…I will hear from heaven and heal their land.’ We reject totally that ‘God rules in the kingdom of men and sets over it the basest of men. Were we to believe that God has full authority and control over all creation…we would ‘rest’ in the knowledge that ‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in HIGH places’….and that ‘the battle is the Lord’s.’ We would TRUST that the state of America and of the world…is the direct result of the divine purpose…permission…and ‘letting’…by our soveriegn God. But we professing Christians have determined within ourselves…what should or should not be. We do not ‘trust’ God to transform and regenerate our own souls…then we insist that we trust Him to regenerate society. We fervently insist that the answer lies in politics…in righteous vs unrighteous politics. But politics is fully ‘societal.’ And God rules over ‘the kingdom of men and sets over it the basest of men.’ Even the scripture we cling to the tightest…the one concerning…’heal the land’ in fully in God’s control and authority. It refers to the blinded and deafened remnant of Israel. That ‘humbling’ and that ‘healing’ is seen in Revelations 11:13…’….and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven.’ These scripture is related to the ‘fulness of the gentiles’….to ‘this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached as a witness unto all nations; AND THEN SHALL THE END COME’ (Matt 24:14). God said this ‘remnant’ is closed to spiritual understanding until the fulness of the gentiles is complete. But our insistence that WE control the world has made us FEARFUL of the evil within it. FEAR IS NOT FAITH/BELIEF/TRUST. It is only in TRUSTING/BELIEVING/YIELDING OUR BODIES AS THE TEMPLE OF GOD…can faith overcome fear. And it remains…according to God’s own Words..that ‘few’ will find it. I am literally and truly at the point of Godly fear and trembling as I work out my own salvation…amidst the the entrenched traditions and doctrines that are so much a part of my Baptist/Methodist experience. Again, timely post. Important. Perfect love, indeed, casts out fear.
