- Girls taller than boys.
- Bubble gum under the desk.
- Endless teasing.
- Annoying pimples.
- The occasional pep rally that got you out of class.
- Trying not to be the first one out in dodge ball.
- And notes…
Notes of all kinds were the superhighway of communication back then. Most notable (pun intended) was the one you sent to find out if someone you liked might actually like you in return. You remember… “Do you like me? check yes, no or maybe.”
And if the other person actually marked “yes” then nothing else in life really mattered. That was as good as it got in Junior High. Oh the joy, the delight, the elation, the ecstasy, the bliss… At least, that’s what I’ve heard. I never had the guts to even send a note like that. But it’s indescribably better with God!
By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us—set us right with him, make us fit for him—we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. And that’s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise. ~Romans 5:1-2 (The Message)
I love the imagery that Eugene Peterson uses here. When we finally say “yes” to God we open the door and find that His door was already open and He’s already marked the note “yes” – as Jesus demonstrated on the cross. We don’t have to wonder! We don’t have to sweat it! We can know for sure – God loves us!
