There is no substitute for the real thing!

I noticed it the other day when I was flipping through some sale flyers in the Sunday paper. A yellow vacuum by Eureka.

What’s so special about that you ask?

I don’t recall Eureka making a yellow vacuum… until Dyson (yellow) became so popular. Perhaps I’m being hyper-sensitive to marketing techniques but I tend to notice those kinds of things.

We’ve heard about how good the Dyson vacuums are and we’ve priced them. They’re not cheap. If I can’t afford the real deal, perhaps I’ll settle for trying one that at least looks like the real deal. You gotta admit, it’s not a bad ploy. But there’s only one problem.

There’s no substitute for the real thing!

The same is true in regard to a relationship with God.

  • Church services.
  • Bible studies and classes.
  • Prayer gatherings.
  • Mission trips.
  • Christian concerts.
  • Christian books – both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Christian music.
  • Christian clothing or jewelry.

All of these are good and worthwhile in their own way; but none of them is a substitute for a genuine relationship with our Creator. Jesus did not die on the cross to bring about any of these activities or things. He gave His very life in order to restore the opportunity for us to live in a vibrant relationship with the Father. I hope you enjoy some or even all of the things listed above, but remember…

There’s no substitute for the real thing!
