Pure determination!

It’s summer and that means softball! Whether you enjoy softball or not you can’t help but appreciate the herculean effort of a high school girl’s game that took place recently in California.

Two softball teams with only one win between them played a nearly four-hour marathon game that finished with a final score of 48-47. It all took place in the regulation seven innings when Cuyama Valley (CA) eventually edged out Coast Union (CA) by pulling off a 13-run final inning.

“The girls were just so excited,” said Cuyama Valley coach Mary Jo Harrington. “They weren’t going to give up in that game. They weren’t playing for much but they wanted to go down winning.”

As you might imagine, the statistics from the game are absolutely staggering:

• Melinda Ramirez, Cuyama Valley’s starting pitcher, earned a victory despite giving up 47 runs on 21 hits. She also scored five runs and had two RBIs.

• Coast Union allowed just 10 hits but walked an astounding 36 Cuyama Valley batters in the loss. The Broncos’ pitchers also threw 25 wild pitches and hit a painful 12 batters.

• Coast Union’s star slugger Morgan May hit 6 for 7 and notched 14 RBIs.

Perhaps most amazing is that Cuyama Valley earned the win without using a single substitute, since the tiny school’s team only has nine players on its roster.

While his team may have eventually suffered a heart-breaking loss, even Coast Union coach Rocky Fordyce said they could take plenty away from the experience.

“We battled back and we never gave up. We had fun. The girls were very positive about it.”

No doubt about it, those girls played with pure determination. The lessons learned from their experience will serve them well as the marathons and challenges of life that we face are typically more significant than a softball game.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. ~ James 1:12 (NIV)

Whatever it is you’re facing… hang in there!
